The FLOW program is a community-based water quality research program designed to better understand, identify, and respond to sources of pollution. FLOW volunteers collect a weekly ocean water sample and analyze its chemical properties and planktonic composition. Click here to learn more about what we do.
New volunteers: Please register for the first few FLOW Fridays that you want to attend, so we know to expect you. No previous experience is required; training is ongoing!
Existing volunteers will accrue hours regardless of whether they register each week.
Notes:
FLOW Friday - order of events: Meet at the Bolsa Chica State Beach Visitor Center (address below); leave in carpools to the water sample collection site; collect a water sample using a phytoplankton net; return to the Visitor Center for analyses with microscopes and water chemistry instruments.
For FLOW Field Trips: Volunteers must first attend FLOW Fridays and are required to fill out state parks volunteer paperwork. Contact volunteers@amigosdebolsachica.org to learn more.
Junior Rangers: See the activity description below for more details. This summer, we offer two types of Junior Ranger activities, FLOW and Microplastics. Park in Lot 16, and then walk to the RV Campground Picnic Tables.
