Girl Scout Badge Assistance

Complete the Daisy Eco-Learner Badge requirements:

  • Prepare before your trip by looking at a photo card of animals and plants that you might see in the wetlands. (photo card provided by Amigos).  Think about where they might live in the wetlands. 
  • Take a tour of the wetlands with an Amigos de Bolsa Chica Naturalist.
  • Play a Bingo game on your walk at the wetlands and see how many plants, animals, and birds you can spot.
  • Learn about how to protect nature on your walk by staying on the path and following the “Leave no Trace” principles.
  • (Optional) Complete a short trash clean-up during or after the tour.

Complete the Brownie Outdoor Adventurer Badge requirements (offered on the First Saturdays of the month):

  • Take a tour of the wetlands with Amigos de Bolsa Chica Naturalists.
  • Explore like a scientist by learning to use binoculars.
  • Play a game to learn about the Food Cycle
  • Learn the camp skill of tying 2 types of knots.
  • Care for the outdoors by doing a short trash clean-up.

Complete the Junior Animal Habitats Badge requirements:

  • On a walking tour, explore what animals need to survive and how they adapt to survive in a coastal wetland habitat.
  • Learn about wild animals by using binoculars to observe birds, and doing an activity about how feathers help them live in this environment.
  • Observe nesting areas and how the nests provide shelter and protection. Create a simplified tern’s nest
  • Learn about 4 threatened and/or endangered birds in the wetlands and what is being done to protect them.
  • Help protect an animal habitat by participating in a trash clean-up.

Complete the Cadette Eco-Trekker Badge requirements:

  • Take a tour of the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve to learn about invasive species and threatened species
  • Learn and follow the “Leave No Trace” principles on the walk
  • Identify durable surfaces for walking in nature areas.  Mark areas of concern on a map of the wetlands
  • Identify an issue of focus for your hike in the wetlands (wildlife issue, water issue, or endangered species), then learn about, observe, take notes, and think about possible solutions to the issue.
  • Talk with an Amigos Naturalist about ways to make a difference and share what you learned on the nature hike.

Complete the Senior Eco-Explorer Badge requirements:

  • Meet an eco-explorer (Naturalist) and learn about the work they do to protect the environment.
  • Take a tour of Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve to learn about the biodiversity of the area and the restoration that was done to support biodiversity in the wetlands.
  • Review and follow the “Leave No Trace” principles
  • Explore threatened wildlife and/or the wetlands role in the ecosystem.  Topics include 4 endangered birds in the wetlands, sea level rise, blue carbon, and more!
  • Talk with an Amigos Naturalist about ways to get involved in nest site restoration, clean-ups, invasive plant removal, or our Citizen Science project monitoring water quality. (FLOW)
  • Share what you learned.  (Talk with an Amigos Naturalist about writing an article, creating a social media post, or other ways to share what you learned)

Our FLOW (Follow and Learn about Oceans & Wetlands) program is a Citizen Science project that monitors the ocean water quality by examining plankton, and water chemistry.  It meets Fridays year-round.  For Girl Scouts interested in exploring careers in Marine Science or STEM fields, please visit https://www.amigosdebolsachica.org/flow to learn more and inquire about participating.

Please have four (4) possible dates for your field trip.  The Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve is used by several other groups, and because parking is limited, it is important our field trips do not overlap. Please be sure to enter the time of day you want your tour to start.
